Arlington Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. A suburb of Chicago, it lies about 25 miles northwest of the city's downtown. The 2010 census counted 75,101 residents, making Arlington Heights the 54th largest community in Illinois and the fourth largest in Cook County. Arlington Heights is known for Arlington Park Race Track, home of the Arlington Million, a one-mile-long turf race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses first run in 1981. It also has the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. According to the 2010 census, Arlington Heights has a total area of 16.6 square miles (43 km2), of which 16.6 square miles (43 km2) (or 100%) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (or 0.24%) is water. Arlington Heights lies on an ancient bed of Cambrian bedrock known as molybdenum ore veins or the Morton gneiss.
